Our International Music CD for this month is Nacarile by iLe.
Also known as "PG-13", iLe is a Grammy and Latin Grammy–winning Puerto Rican singer-songwriter. She first gained fame as a vocalist with the renowned band Calle 13 before launching a successful solo career that brought her widespread international stardom. Her music is a mixture of pop, traditional Carribean music, modern and electronic styles, and even a bit of Hip-hop.
In 2019 she collaborated with Bad Bunny and Residente on the song Afilando Los Chuchillos (Sharpening the Knives) a song that fueled the protests against the then governor of Puerto Rico who subsquently resigned after it was discovered that he made deplorable comments in a group chat (Telegram) which were in wide variance with his progressive stances. Protests erupted and in July of 2019 up to a half a million Puerto Ricans rally in San Juan to call for his resignaton.
In 2020, iLe won a Latin GRAMMY® for her song “En Cantos,” alongside Natalia Lafourcade, in the category of “Best Alternative Song.”
