Our international CD of the month is for Fatou by Fatoumata Diawara. Th Malian singer-songwriter's recording debut is a stripped-down, acoustic album that puts her voice and songwriting front and center. Drawing on Wassoulou musical traditions, the songs blend gentle guitar, subtle rhythms, and lyrics that address themes of migration, women’s rights, and personal independence. The result is an intimate and accessible recording that offers a clear window into contemporary West African music.

Fatoumata Diawara (born 1982) is a Malian singer-songwriter, guitarist, and actress whose music fuses traditional Wassoulou sounds with contemporary styles such as jazz, blues, afro-pop, and electronic music. Note the album cost is a bit dear, but it's available on Amazon streaming and the MP3 version is reasonably priced!<
