University of San Diego historian Molly McClain examines the spinning wheel as a symbol of political resistance and women's labor across different historical and cultural settings. Her presentation considers women's spinning protests during the American Revolution, Gandhi's use of the charkha during India's independence movement, and the labor of enslaved women whose cotton production sustained the textile industry.
