| 10:30 AM | Talk: Japanese Ema Votive Plaques Ema (literally, "picture horse") are wooden votive plaques on which visitors to Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples have for centuries written their prayers and wishes for the _kami _or Buddhist deities to read. Though these plaques originally featured horses, they evolved to feature many different images associated with various wishes, from good fortune to health to love and relationships. In conjunction with the exhibition Painted Prayers: The Japanese Folk Art Tradition of Ema, exhibition curator and Japanese art historian, Meher McArthur will explore the history of these votive plaques, the meanings behind some of the images, and their role in contemporary Japanese spiritual culture.

| 10:00 AM | Exhibit: My Bed Presenting the original artwork featured in the beloved children’s book, My Bed: Enchanting Ways to Fall Asleep Around the World, illustrated by artist Salley Mavor, this exhibition consists of eighteen hand-embroidered, three-dimensional tableaus. Each intricately rendered scene captures the spirit of a different place and way of life, while illuminating the universal theme of children falling asleep. Scenes range from children falling asleep on a houseboat in the Netherlands, in hammocks in Brazil, on a rooftop in Morocco, on futons in Japan, and on an intricate carpet in Afghanistan, to name a few. Mavor lives and works on Cape Cod, in Falmouth, Massachusetts. She was studying illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design in the 1970’s when an insightful teacher encouraged her to tap into her playful side. She discovered that working with stitching and soft sculpture allowed her ideas to come alive in new and unexpected ways. For most of her career, she has followed this path, creating stitched scenes in bas-relief, much like miniature, shallow stage sets, with figures imposed on embellished fabric backgrounds.

The Workforce Development Initiative is a program for young creatives and filmmakers to embark in the professional field in filmmaking and content creation. The program includes a paid internship with the City of San Diego at the San Diego Public Libraries and a paid training facilitated by the Media Arts Center San Diego.

| 10:00 AM | Exhibit: Bonsai Reimagined Bonsai has been part of the artist’s life for many years, both in his artistic work and as a practitioner of the craft. He has studied the art of bonsai with teachers in Southern California and in Japan, learning not only how trees are shaped, but how time, patience, observation, and thoughtful intervention become part of their character. Those same ideas have increasingly found their way into his artwork. The works in this exhibition represent his exploration of bonsai over the past two years through oil painting, mixed media, woodblock printing, and monoprint. Some works begin with a particular tree and remain closely connected to its individual character. Others move further from direct representation, using color, pattern, texture, and layered processes to explore the presence and energy he experiences when looking at bonsai.

She first volunteered for Ukraine's defense effort in 2019 as a combat medic. She later joined the Marines and retrained as a drone pilot. As a service member, she has been awarded the medals For Saving a Life, For Military Service to Ukraine, and the Badge of Honor of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine. Chornohuz is the author of three poetry collections – How the War Circle Bends (2020), [dasein: defense of presence] (2023), and Nobody’s Saffron (2025). Her first nonfiction book, documenting six years of her experience as a female combatant in Russia's war against Ukraine, is forthcoming in Ukrainian. She was awarded Ukraine's highest literary distinction, the Taras Shevchenko National Prize (2024), for [dasein: defense of presence], as well as the UN Women in Arts Award (2024). Her poetry has been translated into English, French, German, Polish, and other languages. She is a member of PEN Ukraine.
Amelia Glaser is a Professor of Literature at UCSD, and a translator from Ukrainian, Yiddish, and Russian. She is the author of Jews and Ukrainians in Russia’s Literary Borderlands (2012) and Songs in Dark Times: Yiddish Poetry of Struggle from Scottsboro to Palestine (2020). Her translations and co-translations from Ukrainian include books by Halyna Kruk, Iya Kiva, and Yaryna Chornohuz. Her translations of Chornohuz's [dasein] and Nobody’s Saffron have appeared, respectively, with Jantar (2025) and Arrowsmith (2026).

Her publications include articles on medieval music, Blondie, David Bowie, PJ Harvey, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, and Pussy Riot; and the books Listening to the Sirens: Musical Technologies of Queer Identity from Homer to Hedwig, and Giving Voice to Love: Song and Self-Expression from the Troubadours to Guillaume de Machaut. She is co-author (with Tom McEnaney) of We’re Having Much More Fun: Punk Archives for the Present from CBGB to Gilman and Beyond.
Tom Enaney (Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Spanish & Portuguese, UC Berkeley) writes about sonic media, music, and literature from the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States. He is the author of Acoustic Properties: Radio, Narrative, and the New Neighborhood of the Americas (2017), and many articles in venues like diacritics, the Journal of Musicology, PMLA, Representations, and Revista de estudios hispánicos. He is an Associate Professor in the departments of Comparative Literature and Spanish & Portuguese, and craiglist Distinguished Chair in New Media at UC Berkeley, as well as co-director of the UC-Cuba Academic Initiative.
Anna Joy Springer (she, they) is a lifelong Californian whose artistic work uses fantastical, speculative, and other figurative modes to explore the nature of interbeing and to register lesser cultural currents through writing and pictures. She is author of The Birdwisher, The Vicious Red Relic, Love, and The Forests of the Vicious Red Relic, Love: A Companion to the Memoir, along with other publications across genres. Frontwoman of former punk bands Blatz, The Gr’ups, and Cypher in the Snow, Anna Joy’s hardcore full-throated feminism inflects a wildly responsive performance style that’s saturated in femme camp, intellectual reflexivity, and political outrage.
