His father, the celebrated Afro-Cuban jazz trumpeter Fabian González, filled their home with the rhythms and harmonies of Cuba's musical heart. At just sixteen, González took his first professional steps as pianist and composer with former Irakere member Oscar Valdés' Afro-Cuban jazz ensemble Diákara. Kumiko has been used in constructing shoji screens, latticework, and other decorative elements in traditional Japanese architecture. In this workshop, Instructor Michael Olin guides students as they learn the basics of kumiko, including the use of hand tools to cut the pieces and assemble the frame. | 11:00 AM | Talk: The History of Manuscript Illumination The history of illuminated manuscripts is filled with beauty and intrigue. These hand-written books which were prized throughout Europe, had painted embellishments and often utilized precious metals such as gold and silver. The pages of these miniature works of art were made up of animal skins called vellum. Illuminated manuscripts were produced in Europe between 1100-1600, and often originated from monasteries or were commissioned by wealthy individuals who wanted them for their personal libraries. Between the 13th and 15th centuries, upper class patrons supported the creation of private workshops that flourished primarily in French and Italian cities and their surrounding courts such as Bruges. One has only to look at the masterpiece, "Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc De Berry" by the noted Limbourg Brothers, to understand how amazing and prized these handmade books became. By 1440 however, their popularity began to diminish with the ability to mass produce books with the advent of the printing press. In this docent-led virtual talk, important manuscripts will be discussed along with their influence on the art of the late Medieval and early Renaissance.

| Music: Sabrosas Latin Orchestra Sabrosas Latin Orchestra, San Diego’s first and only all-female salsa band and a 501(c)(3) organization, is celebrating five years of community, music, and fun in 2024. Founded after identifying a unique opportunity to unite as female musicians, the band brings a shared love of salsa and Latin music to audiences throughout Southern California. With a commitment to serving the community, Sabrosas partners with local schools through mentorship programs as well as organizations like the San Diego Latino Film Festival and San Diego Pride, enlivening the cultural landscape. Sabrosas is proud to have performed at venues such as Cafe Sevilla, the Belly Up, NAMM, and numerous community festivals. Looking ahead, the band is focusing on writing and recording original music, and of course, will continue to inspire and entertain, reinforcing their dedication to bringing Latin music to audiences of all ages.

Join us for the pachanga! The Carnaval features concert readings of four new musicals that are free for everyone to attend at UC San Diego’s Epstein Family Amphitheater. Readings are free, but RSVPs are requested. Carnaval will be an exuberant celebration of Latinx experiences, music and storytelling, uplifting musical theatre writers, composers, lyricists, directors, and music directors. It will bring together theatremakers and theatre decision makers from across the nation to amplify, illuminate, and forward Latinx musical theatre. What does Latinx mean? Latinx is a gender neutral term in place of identifiers such as Latino, Latina or Latin@. The term seeks to reject gender binaries and move towards inclusion that recognizes the intersecting identities of Latin American descendants.

| Music: Around the World in Song Join us for an entertaining afternoon while supporting Osher's Theater World, a talented group of theater artists. Comprised of members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC San Diego, Theater World brings engaging performances to audiences throughout the year, and your attendance helps sustain future productions and creative opportunities for lifelong learners. This event, inspired by Fran Zimmerman and directed by Herb Hein, will feature 18 songs from around the world performed by an ensemble of singers with piano, drums, guitar, and accordion. Local downtown restaurants will provide some small international delights starting at 1pm. There will be limited parking available at the venue for $10, but it is recommended that you take the Blue Line Trolley, which stops right across the street from the venue. You will receive a link to purchase parking in your registration confirmation email. Registration is $25 for this fundraising event and includes admission to the concert and light refreshments. It does not include parking or public transportation. Theater World brings Osher members together to explore the joy of performance through acting, directing, and storytelling. Whether discovering new talents or building on previous experience, participants develop creative skills, form lasting friendships, and enrich the Osher community by entertaining fellow members throughout the year.
