| 9:00 AM | 4th Annual Juneteenth Harriet Tubman Bird Walk Join us for a powerful morning of remembrance, nature, and cultural history as WorldBeat Cultural Center hosts the 4th Annual Harriet Tubman Freedom Birdwatch in honor of Juneteenth and the legacy of Black resistance and liberation. This year’s experience will take place in and around WorldBeat Center’s gardens, where participants will engage in guided birdwatching, cultural storytelling, and hands-on learning. In partnership with Celebrate Urban Birds and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, we’ll be using the Merlin Bird ID app to identify local birds by sight and sound. We’ll also reflect on the important role of birds in history—especially how Harriet Tubman used the call of the barred owl as a secret signal during Underground Railroad missions.

| 7:30 PM | Book Talk: Safar Safar: Finding Home, History, and Culture through Punjabi Food in the American West follows the journey of South Asian refugees, immigrants, and their children-in particular, Sikhs, Jats, and Muslims-who moved to the southwestern states of America over centuries as farmers, truck drivers, restaurant owners, and dhaba/diner stall cooks. An expedition in search of the asli-or real Punjabi food-Madhushree Ghosh explores how their food traveled from pre-partition British India to now, while weaving in her own immigrant journey as a graduate student to America in 1993, her quest to find home through the food of her Bengali refugee parents, and the physical journey she embarked on to visit the Punjabi communities in California, Arizona, and New Mexico. Focusing on four Punjabi women, each a part of a different immigration wave of South Asia to the American West, Ghosh highlights the food and recipes they brought with them that connect them to their pasts. Safar shares stories of displacement, discrimination, community, and hope, while shedding light on immigrant journeys and the true meaning of home, comfort food, and what constitutes a "true Punjabi" meal. This year’s Annual Membership Meeting will center on the timely theme, “Reimagining Border Infrastructure: Lessons from CBX.” As a senior leader at CBX, Eduardo Schutte will share insights into how the organization has transformed regional connectivity by linking San Diego directly to Tijuana International Airport through a unique binational terminal. His remarks will explore what the CBX model can teach us about the future of border infrastructure, mobility, economic integration, and cross-border collaboration. | 5:00 PM | Food: Chinese Pulled Noodles In this hands-on class, students will learn the art of traditional Chinese pulled noodles (lā miàn) alongside the preparation of a versatile “mother sauce” that forms the backbone of countless noodle dishes. Participants will explore dough development, gluten structure, and the rhythmic pulling technique that transforms a simple mixture of flour, water, and salt into long, elastic strands of noodles. The class culminates in assembling a complete dish, pairing freshly pulled noodles with a deeply flavored, adaptable sauce. Chinese pulled noodles trace their origins back over 4,000 years, with early evidence found during the Han Dynasty. Lā miàn, meaning “pulled noodles,” became especially prominent in Northern China, where wheat-based foods dominate. Over time, noodle-making evolved into both a culinary craft and a performance art, with skilled chefs stretching dough into hundreds of strands in a matter of seconds. The concept of a “mother sauce” reflects a broader Chinese cooking philosophy: mastering foundational sauces allows for endless variation across regional cuisines.

Lisa See is the New York Times bestselling author of Lady Tan's Circle of Women, The Island of Sea Women, The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love, Shanghai Girls, China Dolls, and Dreams of Joy, which debuted at #1. She is also the author of On Gold Mountain, which tells the story of her Chinese American family's settlement in Los Angeles. See was the recipient of the Golden Spike Award from the Chinese Historical Association of Southern California and the Historymaker's Award from the Chinese American Museum. She was also named National Woman of the Year by the Organization of Chinese American Women. In 1870, three Chinese women arrive in the small, dusty, and violent pueblo of Los Angeles. Dove, the bound-footed daughter of an imperial scholar, is entrancing and innocent. These characteristics should bring her great rewards, beginning with her arranged marriage to a much older merchant. Petal, the big-footed daughter of peasants, has grown up hungry and with dirt between her toes. In a moment of desperation, Petal's father sells her to buy money for rice seed, and she is loaded onto a ship to the Gold Mountain—America—where she is once again sold. Moon is married to a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. She is educated, speaks fluent English, and has been endowed with a face of great beauty, yet her failed footbinding as a child has left her with a limp that lessens her value in the eyes of many. Each woman has her own desires. Dove wants to love and be loved, Petal desires freedom, and Moon seeks justice. Together they face a larger society that wishes them not one ounce of good will. Anti-Chinese sentiment is strong in Los Angeles, and this eventually leads to the Night of Horrors during which all three women are challenged in ways they could not have imagined. Brought together by hardship and heartbreak, they must use their bravery, endurance, and ability to "eat bitterness" to discover their voices, find freedom, and connect through solace and friendship. Together they are daughters of the sun and moon.

| House of USA Lawn Program The annual lawn program is always held on the Fourth of July or the nearest Sunday to the holiday. The entertainment for this program consists, but not limited to, American traditional folk, country, rock-n-roll, jazz music, patriotic songs, and reading of poems by American authors. The program is held on the HPR International Cottages Stage. Any costumes worn as Uncle Sam colonial men or women, American Revolutionary War soldiers, the west frontier’s cowboys or cowgirls and/or any American historic figures amuse and entertain the audience.

Today, however, the region faces a growing environmental and public health crisis as untreated sewage, industrial pollutants, and contaminated stormwater flow through the watershed and into coastal communities. The impacts are far-reaching. Beach closures, public health concerns, environmental degradation, economic losses, and strained cross-border relationships have affected residents, businesses, and ecosystems throughout the San Diego-Tijuana region. While the challenges are significant, they also underscore the need for innovative solutions, regional cooperation, and sustained binational engagement. Join the San Diego World Affairs Council for a timely discussion exploring one of the most pressing transboundary issues facing our region today. Poisoned Waters: The Tijuana River Crisis and the Future of Cross-Border Cooperation will bring together leaders and experts from both sides of the border to examine the crisis from environmental, public health, community, economic, and binational perspectives.
