Giacomo Puccini’s one-act masterpiece Il Tabarro, Italian for The Cloak, is a dramatic story of love, jealousy, and betrayal. Set aboard a river barge in Paris at the turn of the century, the soul-stirring melodies will transport you to a foggy night of deception and death. Il Tabarro is the least-performed of the three operas in Puccini’s triple-bill Il Trittico (The Triptych). While companies frequently mount double bills of Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, they usually overlook “Il Tabarro,” the first opera Puccini composed in the trio. In just one hour, you’ll be spellbound by the beauty and power of this music, whether you’re a devoted opera fan or a first-timer. That’s just half of the program, though. After the intermission, you’ll see the same story told in a completely different way: through neoclassical ballet. Featuring original choreography, this brand new adaptation of Il Tabarro reverses the narrative as the characters are now silent, speaking only through mesmerizingly expressive movements. The band name "DOES" is derived from the word for a female deer (doe). Their raw energy quickly caught the attention of major labels in Tokyo, leading to their major debut with Ki/oon Records (Sony Music) in 2006. 2007 – 2010: Breaking into the Mainstream The band skyrocketed to fame with the single "Shura," used as the ending theme for the TV anime "Gintama," debuting at No. 9 on the Oricon charts. | Music: Los Rebeldes Romanticos Los Rebeldes Románticos are redefining the local music scene with their passion for romantic music and timeless melodies. Known for their soulful performances, the trio has captivated audiences across Los Angeles, from enchanting crowds at the Union Station Holiday Show to energizing the city’s nightlife, and most recently, performing for over 1,000 people at the Levitt Pavilion summer concert series to the City Of Glendale Holiday Music Series. Rooted in family traditions and inspired by the music they grew up with, these three talented musicians bring heartfelt storytelling and vibrant energy to every stage. Just as she receives the call that could change her career, she’s pulled back to her childhood home, where she’s once again the “disappointing” daughter of her Asian immigrant parents, still haunted by an unresolved secret. Mia must learn to use her voice to confront and heal from the past. In 2017, MILCK and AG’s “Quiet” became a viral sensation around the world as an anthem of the Women’s March. That same spirit inspired them and acclaimed playwright Sam Chanse to draw on each of their personal stories to create The Family Album, a humorous and poignant original musical about finding and reclaiming your voice and using it for change. Commissioned by La Jolla Playhouse, The Family Album features a soulful power-pop score by MILCK and AG. Director Jess McLeod is known for work that blends emotional intimacy with expansive visual storytelling. This powerful, uplifting new musical is a journey through the healing power of connection. | 10:30 AM | Exhibit: Colors of Nature Fumiyo Imafuku is a Japanese textile artist and professor of Architecture and Art at Otemae University, Japan. Her research and artistic practice merge traditional Japanese dyeing and weaving techniques with contemporary environments. Imafuku's scholarly work includes the historic revival of ancient purple dyeing methods—a complex, time-honored process she has recreated and exhibited internationally. This exhibition features works created specifically for this exhibition using natural plant-based materials, as well as various works in katazome, a traditional Japanese stencil dyeing technique. Through these works, visitors are invited to explore the beauty of the finished textiles and the cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and time-honored processes of life. This event will be hosted on Saturday, August 1st in the North Park community from 11am-4pm & will feature DELICIOUS soul food from across the diaspora. Most people just think of one thing when they think of soul food, we want to provide the opportunity to expose folks to different types of cuisines while supporting local businesses, large and small. We are taking advantage of the opportunity to bring the local community together, but also provide exposure to different black owned eateries. Joined by David Neptune on Takeda percussion, Christophe Ambrosino on guitar, and Spencer Hinkle on bass, the quintet explores original compositions shaped by Japanese melodies, South Indian rhythm, jazz improvisation, Latin influences, and musical traditions from around the world.
