aja monet Bacquie is a Brooklyn-born, Cuban-Jamaican poet, musician, and activist. Her work explores themes of love, gender, justice, and spirituality. At 19, she became the youngest Grand Slam Champion in the history of the Nuyorican Poets Café. Monet's debut poetry collection, My Mother Was a Freedom Fighter, was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in 2018. Def Sound (born Emmanuel "Def Sound" Ricketts) is an Afro-Caribbean, post-binary transdisciplinary artist, poet, and producer based in South Central, Los Angeles. They are widely recognized as a "conceptual word artist" whose music and academic work merge hip-hop theory, poetry, and Black critical theory.
