Learn how the Kumeyaay used yucca plants to make strong cordage. Use traditional techniques, extract fibers and create your own yucca twine. Discover the ingenuity of the Kumeyaay people and their traditional use of native yucca plants to create durable cordage for everyday life. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn about the cultural significance of yucca and the many ways its fibers were used for making rope, nets, baskets, and other essential tools. Attendees will process yucca leaves, extract the strong fibers within, and practice traditional twisting techniques to create their own handmade twine. This engaging experience offers a unique opportunity to connect with Indigenous knowledge, local plant resources, and time-honored craftsmanship.
