For more than 10 years, the Japanese government has pursued the Indo-Pacific Grand Strategy around the concept of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” — both to promote a rules-based regional and global order and to sustain stability and prosperity in the region. With President Trump in office for a second term (since January 2025) and the rift with China over Prime Minister Takaichi’s comment on Taiwan, Japan faces an even more uncertain foreign policy environment than in the past. Drawing on the recently published co-authored book “Japan’s Grand Strategy: Liminal Power in an Uncertain World,” Saori N. Katada and Kei Koga will discuss both the security and geoeconomic challenges Japan faces in its relations with the United States, and how they shape Japan’s grand strategy.
