In an election with potentially serious ramifications for the United States? relationship with its southern neighbor and third-biggest trading partner, Mexico's voters will go to the polls on July 1, 2018, to elect a successor to President Enrique Pe?a Nieto, who is ineligible to seek a second term. Will voters return to office the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) or opt for a new direction such as a coalition of the center-right PAN and the left-center PRD? What are the chances of the left-wing, nationalist candidate Andr?s Manuel L?pez Obrador? Will a new president be able to get a handle on issues that have plagued Mexico such as corruption and violence? What effect could a new administration have on key bilateral issues such as NAFTA, the border wall and drug trafficking?
