We shall explore this dynamic period through the lens of its greatest artists. Art has always been the handmaiden of power, its uses and abuses magnified by this era. The power of grand monarchs of this period is clearly evident, whether through Philip IV of Spain, France?s Sun King, or Louis XIV. The power of a monolithic Church confronted the existential threat of Martin Luther?s Reformation. Prominent was the power of belief and ideas, and ultimately, the power of great art.
