This year's Hostelling International USA (HI USA) Peacebuilding Conference will focus on encouraging San Diegans to recognize our unique border area as a place to explore global awareness and cultural exchange. Speakers, including Derrik Chin, founder of Turiste Libre, Elisa Sabatini, Executive Director of Via International, and representatives from Discover Baja will share reasons why they promote cross-border engagement. Appetizers from Super Cocina are included in the $5.00 registration fee.
The 2016 Peacebuilding Conference is being held on the International Day of Peace and in conjunction with HI?s Sleep for Peace program.
The United Nations has designated the 21st of September as the International Day of Peace, providing an opportunity for all humanity to come together, in spirit and action, to forward the conditions of peace. Since 2013, HI USA has chosen to be involved through our Sleep for Peace program. Sleep for Peace is a global initiative which reinforces the message that hostelling contributes to building peace on a day-to-day basis through the benefits of travel and intercultural exchange. It has grown to include 31 countries, over 140 hostels and nearly 3,000 guests and local communities.
Speakers:
Derrik Chin, founder of Turiste Libre
In 2007, Cincinnati native Derrik Chinn did something not unthinkable but defnitely abnormal. He moved to Tijuana, Mexico. A former entertainment reporter and photographer for the San Diego Union-Tribune, he now operates Turista Libre, a day-trip company aimed at destigmatizing the border city and its surrounding territories by ushering foreigners to sights usually reserved for locals. Chinn calls the city ?a postmodern mecca of otherworldliness and humble innovation,? adding, ?beneath the veil of corruption and violence, Tijuana mesmerizes.?
Colleen Patricia Garrett, Secretary of the San Diego Peace Corps Association
Colleen regularly crosses the US/Mexico border to participate in volunteer projects, eat amazing meals, visit historical sites and enjoy an international experience close to home. She will be talking about why it is important to her to visit Baja and how she has simplified the process.
Jennifer Kramer, of Discover Baja and Baja Test Kitchen
Jennifer will share information on how to obtain necessary documents to cross the border, talk about travel safety and provide ideas for things to do just south of the US border.
Admission/Cost:
Wednesday, September 21 - 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM
