Currently worldwide, more than 15 million people have been forced to flee their homes because of war or persecution. The 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees officially designated the status of "refugee" to those families and individuals who have to fear for their lives and are unable to return home for reasons of race, religion, nationality, social group or political opinion.
San Diego is the refugee resettlement capital of the world, offering more refugee families and individuals a safe haven and a chance to rebuild their lives than any other area of similar size around the globe.
For years, many countries and regions have been holding various Refugee Days and even Weeks. One of the most widespread has been Africa Refugee Day, celebrated on June 20 in several countries. In 2000, the UN General Assembly decided that from 2001, June 20 would be celebrated as World Refugee Day.
June 21, 2014 San Diego will celebrate its Fourth World Refugee Day. The day will highlight the many contributions refugees make to their new communities in San Diego, across the country, and worldwide.
Meet your neighbor and celebrate San Diego as the refugee resettlement capital of the world. Join us for cultural performances and panel discussions. Round out the day by visiting our Bazaar, where you can purchase food, textiles and crafts from local refugee business owners.
The consequences of all war and conflict can be measured by the personal struggles of refugees as they seek a new community, a new home. Join us to meet your neighbors, or refugees from around the world who are forging new lives of hope.
