| 5:00 PM | Food: Chinese Pulled Noodles In this hands-on class, students will learn the art of traditional Chinese pulled noodles (lā miàn) alongside the preparation of a versatile “mother sauce” that forms the backbone of countless noodle dishes. Participants will explore dough development, gluten structure, and the rhythmic pulling technique that transforms a simple mixture of flour, water, and salt into long, elastic strands of noodles. The class culminates in assembling a complete dish, pairing freshly pulled noodles with a deeply flavored, adaptable sauce. Chinese pulled noodles trace their origins back over 4,000 years, with early evidence found during the Han Dynasty. Lā miàn, meaning “pulled noodles,” became especially prominent in Northern China, where wheat-based foods dominate. Over time, noodle-making evolved into both a culinary craft and a performance art, with skilled chefs stretching dough into hundreds of strands in a matter of seconds. The concept of a “mother sauce” reflects a broader Chinese cooking philosophy: mastering foundational sauces allows for endless variation across regional cuisines.

| 7:00 PM | Book Talk: Daughters of the Sun and Moon Warwick's and USD’s College of Arts and Sciences and Humanities Center present Lisa See as she discusses her new book, Daughters of the Sun and Moon. Lisa See is the New York Times bestselling author of Lady Tan's Circle of Women, The Island of Sea Women, The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love, Shanghai Girls, China Dolls, and Dreams of Joy, which debuted at #1. She is also the author of On Gold Mountain, which tells the story of her Chinese American family's settlement in Los Angeles. See was the recipient of the Golden Spike Award from the Chinese Historical Association of Southern California and the Historymaker's Award from the Chinese American Museum. She was also named National Woman of the Year by the Organization of Chinese American Women. In 1870, three Chinese women arrive in the small, dusty, and violent pueblo of Los Angeles. Dove, the bound-footed daughter of an imperial scholar, is entrancing and innocent. These characteristics should bring her great rewards, beginning with her arranged marriage to a much older merchant. Petal, the big-footed daughter of peasants, has grown up hungry and with dirt between her toes. In a moment of desperation, Petal's father sells her to buy money for rice seed, and she is loaded onto a ship to the Gold Mountain—America—where she is once again sold. Moon is married to a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. She is educated, speaks fluent English, and has been endowed with a face of great beauty, yet her failed footbinding as a child has left her with a limp that lessens her value in the eyes of many. Each woman has her own desires. Dove wants to love and be loved, Petal desires freedom, and Moon seeks justice. Together they face a larger society that wishes them not one ounce of good will. Anti-Chinese sentiment is strong in Los Angeles, and this eventually leads to the Night of Horrors during which all three women are challenged in ways they could not have imagined. Brought together by hardship and heartbreak, they must use their bravery, endurance, and ability to "eat bitterness" to discover their voices, find freedom, and connect through solace and friendship. Together they are daughters of the sun and moon.

| Film: Happy as Lazzaro It’s summer at Inviolata, an isolated rural estate, where an extended family of tobacco farmers toil under the rule of a domineering marchesa, and where the handsome and hard-working Lazzaro (captivating newcomer Adriano Tardiolo), a young man imbued with a saint-like innocence, is alternately adored and taken advantage of. When the marchesa’s self-absorbed son, Tancredi (Luca Chikovani) first visits the fields, he senses an opportunity, and embroils Lazzaro in an audacious plan that spirals out of control and throws the estate into a complicated chaos that takes everybody by surprise. Channelling the spirit of Pasolini, Rohrwacher’s fascinating, deeply affecting parable casts an ethereal, wondrous spell, and confirms her status as one of the most inventive and compelling voices in contemporary Italian cinema with this utterly transporting film experience.

| Film: WTO/99 An immersive archival documentary that depicts the four-day clash between the then-emerging World Trade Organization (WTO) and the 40,000+ people who took to the streets of Seattle in 1999 to protest the WTO Conference and the WTO’s impact on human rights, labor, and the future effects of continued globalization. “WTO/99 brilliantly makes the case for the Seattle WTO protests as a watershed moment in modern history—one with urgent significance in understanding issues we face today. The militarization of the police, the proliferation of right-wing media and fake news, the collapse of our democracy into fascism, and the ever-growing power of multinational corporations all seem to be taking hold before our eyes in this film. WTO/99accomplishes this convincingly and artfully, seamlessly weaving together primary sources in a bravura manner” – Eric Allen Hatch

| 10:00 AM | Talk: Poisoned Waters For decades, the Tijuana River watershed has served as a vital ecological and community resource connecting communities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Today, however, the region faces a growing environmental and public health crisis as untreated sewage, industrial pollutants, and contaminated stormwater flow through the watershed and into coastal communities. The impacts are far-reaching. Beach closures, public health concerns, environmental degradation, economic losses, and strained cross-border relationships have affected residents, businesses, and ecosystems throughout the San Diego-Tijuana region. While the challenges are significant, they also underscore the need for innovative solutions, regional cooperation, and sustained binational engagement. Join the San Diego World Affairs Council for a timely discussion exploring one of the most pressing transboundary issues facing our region today. Poisoned Waters: The Tijuana River Crisis and the Future of Cross-Border Cooperation will bring together leaders and experts from both sides of the border to examine the crisis from environmental, public health, community, economic, and binational perspectives. Together, panelists will explore the root causes of the crisis, the impacts on affected communities, current efforts to address the problem, and opportunities for greater collaboration among government agencies, community organizations, researchers, and residents. The conversation will also consider what the future of cross-border cooperation can and should look like as the region works toward long-term solutions. As San Diego and Tijuana continue to grow as an interconnected binational region, the health of the Tijuana River watershed serves as a powerful reminder that many of our greatest challenges—and opportunities—do not stop at the border.

| 7:30 PM | Stage: The Family Album Singer-songwriter Mia Bing has been hustling for years and is on the cusp of breaking through in the music industry. Just as she receives the call that could change her career, she’s pulled back to her childhood home, where she’s once again the “disappointing” daughter of her Asian immigrant parents, still haunted by an unresolved secret. Mia must learn to use her voice to confront and heal from the past. In 2017, MILCK and AG’s “Quiet” became a viral sensation around the world as an anthem of the Women’s March. That same spirit inspired them and acclaimed playwright Sam Chanse to draw on each of their personal stories to create The Family Album, a humorous and poignant original musical about finding and reclaiming your voice and using it for change. Commissioned by La Jolla Playhouse, The Family Album features a soulful power-pop score by MILCK and AG. Director Jess McLeod is known for work that blends emotional intimacy with expansive visual storytelling. This powerful, uplifting new musical is a journey through the healing power of connection. It will hit you right in the heart.

| Stage: The Family Album Singer-songwriter Mia Bing has been hustling for years and is on the cusp of breaking through in the music industry.

| Stage: Cyrano Brilliant poet, dazzling swordsman, and hopeless romantic, Cyrano is as quick with a quip as he is with a blade. But behind his bluster lies shame about his physical appearance. When the beautiful, soulful Roxane—whom Cyrano has loved all his life—falls for a handsome young soldier, Cyrano’s insecurity prompts him to hide his true feelings and lend his rival the words to woo the woman they both adore. In this exuberant and irreverent adaptation of the classic Cyrano de Bergerac, comedy and pathos collide in a tale bursting with wit, romance, and panache. Cyrano is a celebration of love in all its forms—the bold, the bashful, and the heartbreakingly brave.
