Giacomo Puccini’s one-act masterpiece Il Tabarro, Italian for The Cloak, is a dramatic story of love, jealousy, and betrayal. Set aboard a river barge in Paris at the turn of the century, the soul-stirring melodies will transport you to a foggy night of deception and death. Il Tabarro is the least-performed of the three operas in Puccini’s triple-bill Il Trittico (The Triptych). While companies frequently mount double bills of Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, they usually overlook “Il Tabarro,” the first opera Puccini composed in the trio. In just one hour, you’ll be spellbound by the beauty and power of this music, whether you’re a devoted opera fan or a first-timer. That’s just half of the program, though. After the intermission, you’ll see the same story told in a completely different way: through neoclassical ballet. Featuring original choreography, this brand new adaptation of Il Tabarro reverses the narrative as the characters are now silent, speaking only through mesmerizingly expressive movements. This time, you’ll hear the same amazing orchestrations but without any vocal parts.

Though their name means Give/Take in the old language, DakhaBrakha is new Ukraine, both pre-colonial and post-Soviet, working within a global network of art and music. They aim to help audiences see Ukraine not as a monolith, but as a cosmopolitan culture that takes in other cultures, and gives in return.

| 8:00 PM | Music: DOES 2003 – 2006: Formation and Major Debut Formed in Fukuoka by Wataru Ujihara (Vocals & Guitar), Yasushi Akatsuka (Bass & Chorus), and Kesaku Morita (Drums & Chorus). The band name "DOES" is derived from the word for a female deer (doe). Their raw energy quickly caught the attention of major labels in Tokyo, leading to their major debut with Ki/oon Records (Sony Music) in 2006. 2007 – 2010: Breaking into the Mainstream The band skyrocketed to fame with the single "Shura," used as the ending theme for the TV anime "Gintama," debuting at No. 9 on the Oricon charts. Their 2008 single "Donten" climbed to No. 3, becoming a massive hit with over 200,000 digital downloads—a rare feat for a rock band at the time.
