| 6:30 PM | Talk: Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World In 1829, a free Black abolitionist living in Boston published a pamphlet that sent shock waves of terror through slaveholding America. It was a direct and radical challenge to slavery in the U.S. The work was Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World, written by David Walker. Join Professors Matsemela Odom and Thekima Mayasa of Mesa College and Danny Widener of UCSD for a stimulating discussion of the Appeal, its status as the most radical of all anti-slavery documents, and its international call to arms against enslavement and anti-Blackness.

We invite you to take part in our Varenyky Making Day, dedicated to preparing traditional Ukrainian dumplings. It’s a volunteer effort to support the House of Ukraine. Together, we will make varenyky that will be sold during Ukrainian Festival in Balboa Park, to raise funds for our organization. About the Dish: Varenyky are traditional Ukrainian dumplings made from unleavened dough with various fillings such as potato, cheese, sauerkraut, mushrooms, or fruit. They are typically served with sour cream or fried onions — a comforting symbol of Ukrainian hospitality.

Explore the rich history and cultural significance of Kumeyaay rock art in this engaging, hands-on workshop. Participants will learn how pictographs and petroglyphs were used to record stories, share knowledge, mark important places, and express connections to the natural world. Through guided discussion, attendees will examine traditional rock art designs and their meanings before creating their own pictograph on stone to take home. As a special bonus, each participant will receive a complimentary copy of La Rumorosa Rock Art Along the Border by Don Liponi, offering a deeper look into the fascinating rock art traditions found along the border region.

Music and movement for kids and families with Brazilian duo, Do Re Tree. An interactive performance that includes traditional songs, movement, storytelling, percussion, and body music. The songs and storytelling are based on Brazilian oral traditions relating to aspects such as animals, nature, folktales and children's music. The percussion pieces will utilize traditional Brazilian instruments such as the berimbau and caxixi, which are handmade out of natural materials such as wood, gourds, and animal skins.

Her research and artistic practice merge traditional Japanese dyeing and weaving techniques with contemporary environments. Imafuku's scholarly work includes the historic revival of ancient purple dyeing methods—a complex, time-honored process she has recreated and exhibited internationally. This exhibition features works created specifically for this exhibition using natural plant-based materials, as well as various works in katazome, a traditional Japanese stencil dyeing technique. In this hands-on workshop, you will use Japanese pigment watercolor paint called "Gansai" and premium washi postcards from the long-established Kyoto washi shop "Kyukyodo" as your canvas. Using a delicate stencil pattern carved by traditional craftsmen, you will create one to three original postcard-sized works. After the workshop, you can take your finished postcards and a mini hanging scroll home.

We will be using a natural indigo vat to dye a bamboo scarf and better understand the process and symbiotic relationship with indigo dye and this traditional textile surface design.
