Explore the rich history and cultural significance of Kumeyaay rock art in this engaging, hands-on workshop. Participants will learn how pictographs and petroglyphs were used to record stories, share knowledge, mark important places, and express connections to the natural world. Through guided discussion, attendees will examine traditional rock art designs and their meanings before creating their own pictograph on stone to take home. As a special bonus, each participant will receive a complimentary copy of La Rumorosa Rock Art Along the Border by Don Liponi, offering a deeper look into the fascinating rock art traditions found along the border region.

| NOON | Claudia Lyra Brazilian Stories and Music Come and enjoy the joyful Brazilian music and storytime. Musician Claudia Lyra brings musical instruments so that the audience can participate too!
Music and movement for kids and families with Brazilian duo, Do Re Tree. An interactive performance that includes traditional songs, movement, storytelling, percussion, and body music. The songs and storytelling are based on Brazilian oral traditions relating to aspects such as animals, nature, folktales and children's music. The percussion pieces will utilize traditional Brazilian instruments such as the berimbau and caxixi, which are handmade out of natural materials such as wood, gourds, and animal skins.
This program is part of the Summer Reading Program. San Diego residents of all ages are encouraged to Plant a Seed..Read! Her research and artistic practice merge traditional Japanese dyeing and weaving techniques with contemporary environments. Imafuku's scholarly work includes the historic revival of ancient purple dyeing methods—a complex, time-honored process she has recreated and exhibited internationally. This exhibition features works created specifically for this exhibition using natural plant-based materials, as well as various works in katazome, a traditional Japanese stencil dyeing technique. | 1:00 PM | Katazome Print Workshop Create katazome postcard prints and a mini hanging scroll using patterns designed by Japanese artisans. In this hands-on workshop, you will use Japanese pigment watercolor paint called "Gansai" and premium washi postcards from the long-established Kyoto washi shop "Kyukyodo" as your canvas. Using a delicate stencil pattern carved by traditional craftsmen, you will create one to three original postcard-sized works. After the workshop, you can take your finished postcards and a mini hanging scroll home.

Students will learn a range of shibori dye resist processes in this hands-on, creative workshop, including tegumo (spiderweb), ori nui (stitched), and itajime (clamped) shibori methods. We will be using a natural indigo vat to dye a bamboo scarf and better understand the process and symbiotic relationship with indigo dye and this traditional textile surface design.
