| 11:00 AM | City Heights El Dia de Muerto The Dia de los Muertos festival is an important day to celebrate cultural pride in its many manifestations. When performances start, the giant garage-like door of the Performance Annex rises, and the music spills out from the stage and swells throughout the crowd nearby on the park lawn. Dancers grace the stage, and lyrical or staccato rhythms vibrate. Ever popular, Victoria Mariachi, and Rick and Friends return. There is dance for every taste from San Diego Ballet to Aztec Dancers. Theater lovers of all ages will be treated to The Old Globe and Fern St. Circus. Youth participate in a drum lesson with Drummers Without Borders, and a drum parade follows with colorful giant banners, inviting all to join. Family and community altars abound.
There will be a Fun Zone for young ones with bouncy “houses.” Paper mask making activities for all ages is hosted by San Diego Guild of Puppetry.

Capoeira is a martial art integrated with dance, ritual, and gravity defying acrobatics. It is marked by deft, tricky movements often played on the ground or completely inverted. It is always played with music. Capoeira balances the body, soul and mind. It is a graceful and exciting art form that teaches you to be alert. Capoeira is both a dance and a fight which asks you also engage your mind in learning its music, culture, history and knowledge. Batizado literally means “baptism”; besides being an initiation rite for new students it is also a graduation ceremony for advanced students and a great capoeira community celebration with masters from near and far are invited and the fraternity of capoeira is measurably strengthened by the camaraderie and interplay. These ceremonies are a great chance to see a variety of different capoeira styles, to watch mestres play, and to see participants play and perform their best after much perseverance and preparation. Capoeira is usually done inside a circle of people called a “roda”, pronouced HO-DUH. The people in the circle are usually other capoeiristas waiting to “play”, and observers. A roda will usually commence with a ladainha (litany), often sung by the most senior member present. These songs may be improvised on the spot, but are often famous songs written by an earlier mestre and sung in Portuguese. After the ladainha has been sung, the same singer will usually sing the chulas, which are usually made up of any of the lines listed in the chulas section below but, again, may be improvised on the spot. The chorus repeats each line of the chula after it has been sung. Finally, corridos will be sung while the game is playing. In most rodas anyone can sing a corrido, though most often they will be sung by the members of the group playing instruments, the bateria.

Using photocopied photos or hand-drawn portraits, along with meaningful decorations, these shadow boxes serve as heartfelt tributes that celebrate memory, legacy, and connection beyond the physical world. Thomas Schlesser is the director of the Hartung-Bergman Foundation in Antibes, France. He teaches Art History at the École Polytechnique in Paris. He is the grandson of André Schlesser, known as Dadé, a singer and cabaret performer who founded the Cabaret L'Écluse. Mona's Eyes is Schlesser's American debut. It has been translated into thirty-eight languages, including Braille. Schlesser was named 2025's Author of the Year by Livres Hebdo.

Guests are invited to help decorate a community ofrenda as we honor the lives of family and loved ones who have passed. The day will include a potluck meal, storytelling, hands-on crafts for all ages, and a cacao ceremony with Nayelin Almonte.
Bring a dish to share, a photo or small item for the ofrenda, and your stories. All are welcome to take part in this beautiful celebration of memory, connection, and culture.
This free event is bilingual, for all ages, and open to the public.
Since 1978, The Elizabeth Hospice has been providing medical and emotional support to adults and children facing the challenges of an advanced, serious illness and restoring hope to those who are grieving. The Elizabeth Hospice is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

We welcome you and your family & friends to join us as we honor the rich traditions and share in the experience of Día de los Muertos. Dorothea Laub Building in the Arts District of Liberty Station located in Point Loma!
Rooted in community, family, and remembrance, this event creates a heart-centered and safe space for all ages to honor their loved ones—both people and animals—who have passed. Through music, art, hands-on and interactive activities, we invite families to learn, create, and celebrate together. This is a non-scary, family-friendly gathering designed to foster cultural awareness, connection, and joy while celebrating the traditions of Día de los Muertos in our community.
We’ll be decorating calavera (skull) cookies in the morning. Then, we’ll enjoy music making and festivities before a procession set to begin at 2pm. Join us as we walk together through the Dorothea Laub and Dance Place Buildings. We’ll enjoy the art, music making, and handmade shrines made by local community members and students! Festivities and open house will run until 5pm. Specific activities will be available only as long as supplies last. We hope to see you and your loved ones there!

| Talk: Disrupting the Cycle of Genocide In an era of rising political polarization and identity-driven conflict, how resistant is the United States to the threat of genocidal violence? What lessons can be drawn from societies that have experienced genocide—and how might deep-rooted cultural narratives around honor, rage, and revenge make even established democracies vulnerable? Join the San Diego World Affairs Council (SDWAC) and the SDSU Centers for Human Rights and War and Society for a vital conversation with Professor Alexander Hinton, a leading expert on genocide, cultural violence, and white power movements in the United States. Hinton is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, Director of the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights, and UNESCO Chair on Genocide Prevention at Rutgers University. His recent book, It Can Happen Here: White Power and the Rising Threat of Genocide in the US, explores how seemingly stable societies can spiral into violence. The discussion will be moderated by Grace Cheng, Founding Director of the Center for Human Rights at the College of Arts and Letters at San Diego State University. This event confronts difficult but necessary questions about the fragility of democracy, the power of ideology, and the warning signs we must not ignore.

| 5:30 PM | Exhibit Opening Reception & Lecture: 'Bitter Sweet with Kitty Morse' CHA is proud to announce the opening of its newest WWII exhibit. In honor of this exhibit, join us Thursday, November 6, for an exhibit opening reception and lecture featuring author Kitty Morse.
Kitty will discuss her new book, "Bitter Sweet: A Wartime Journal and Heirloom Recipes from Occupied France." This book was written after she discovered her great-grandfather's journal chronicling the advance of the Germans in Le Grand Est (Alsace-Lorraine) between April and December 1940, and two notebooks filled with recipes written in her great-grandmother’s hand in a suitcase left to her by her mother.
"Bitter Sweet" takes place in and around her mother’s birthplace, Châlons-sur-Marne (now Châlons-en-Champagne.) Blanche Lévy-Neymarck, Morse's maternal great-grandmother, died at Auschwitz in 1944 along with one of her daughters and her son-in-law. Blanche's husband Prosper, an army surgeon in WWI, was twice the recipient of the Légion d'Honneur. This book is not just the story of a family torn apart by war, but it also features 70 unique recipes that show the rich history of a family.

The San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF) is San Diego’s premier film showcase of Asian American and international cinema. Founded in 2000, the festival has grown to become the largest exhibition of Asian cinema in the western United States, and has showcased everything from future classics like Bong Joon-ho’s Memories of Murder (US Premiere) to luminary independent work like Patrick Wang’s award-winning In the Family (North American Premiere). Each year, the festival brings West Coast, North American, and World premieres of films from around the world to San Diego and gives audiences unique opportunities to discover international cinema.

Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

| Valley Arts Festival A Celebration of a Luiseno Tribe, The San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians Valley Arts Festival (VAF) is an annual celebration honoring Oceanside’s first peoples—the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians, part of the Luiseño nation (Payómkawichum, “People of the West”). Now in its fifth year, VAF highlights over 10,000 years of indigenous history, culture, and contributions, while supporting community education and cultural enrichment. A portion of proceeds benefits the San Luis Rey Mission Indian Foundation.
