Music scholar and historian Dr. Kimberly Hawkins presents "Music of Black Protest" as part of North County?s Black History Month Celebration, a musical lecture and multi-genre singalong based on negro spirituals, blues and gospel. The lecture series, recitals and singalongs have been created to preserve, share and expose Americans and the world to the long and storied history of African American music in American culture. The program will also demonstrate how African American traditions continue to influence and permeate American society to this day. Dr. Hawkins earned her doctorate in music from the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she was also a lecturer on music in African American Culture for the Department of Black Studies.
