Stage: The Explorers Club

Neil Benjamin's post-colonial comedy lambastes Victorian rectitude, varieties of male sexism, and the British love of Empire (one even claims he discovered the "East Pole"). How? By having a woman join the heretofore all-male Explorer's Club in 1879. She's Phyllida Spotte Hume (Jessica John, sharp and funny). Theintrepid adventuressdiscovered a Lost City (at the "worst place on earth") and earned the right to be a member. As proof, she brings Luigi, a native, painted blue. The premise intrigues, but the slight play hops from episode to episode without an engine driving it forward. Lamb's Players production, ably directed by Robert Smyth, gets every possible laugh from the piece. And the male actors (Francis Gercke, Ross Hellwig, John Rosen, Brian Mackey, Omri Schein, Paul Eggington, and Brian Salmon) catch a series of sliding glass tumblers with near-Olympian dexterity.Worth a try.
