Her fiction includes two collections of short stories (Las Infantas and Avidez) and five novels (Póstuma, Cercada, Fruta podrida, Sangre en el ojo, and Sistema nervioso), translated into twelve languages. Her non-fiction works include two essays on the body (Viajes virales and Zona ciega), two feminist essays (Contra los hijos, Esa cosa animal, and Coloquio de las quiltras), the autobiographical essay Señales de nosotros, and three books on the Middle East: Palestina en pedazos (an expanded version of her earlier Volverse Palestina, winner of the Chilean-Arab Institute of Culture Prize in 2015), the lyrical essay Palestina por ejemplo, and her writings on genocide collected in Matarlo todo. Her shorter essays are compiled in Ensayo general and Tantos frentes. | Talk: Migration and Indigenous Healing Practices in a Global Church The lecture will examine the context of structural and direct violence that marks migration throughout the Americas and the impact of such violence upon the health of migrant communities in the United States. Prof. Guardado will then explain some of his fieldwork with an indigenous healer from southern Mexico who migrated to New York City during Covid and the conceptual, psychological, and spiritual challenges that emerge through this work. Lastly, the lecture will raise questions about dominant Euro-American forms of Roman Catholicism that reject indigenous healing practices that serve as the healthcare of the poor, and how this rejection continues a legacy of spiritual and psychological violence that must be exorcised from the church

The festival will open on Friday, March 27, and present 8 screenings, each showcasing one feature film and one short film (except for one that has 2 shorts and one in which the feature is long so it doesn’t have an accompanying short), from across the Arab World. All films are presented at the John and Irwin Jacobs Theater in the Museum of Photographic Arts. Each evening, the festival will also offer cafeteria-style Arabic dinner.
This year we have all three films from and about Palestine that were shortlisted for the Best International feature award. Six of our films were the official submission by their respective countries for Best International Feature (Palestine 36, Palestine, The Voice of Hind Rajab, Tunisia, All that’s Left of You, Jordan, A Sad and Beautiful World, Lebanon, The President’s Cake, Iraq,, and Calle Malaga, Morocco. Our short films include two films about Palestine from Iranian filmmakers, who are struggling to find international audiences because of US sanctions, as well as films from Palestine, Jordan, Egypt and Yemen and the US.
We are excited to bring these films to the San Diego community!

| Talk: Journey of a Persian Carpet As part of Maryam Bayat: Unrolling Paradise, this free public program offers a welcoming introduction to the art and history of Persian carpets through film, conversation, and hands-on making. Families and visitors of all ages are invited to explore the journey of a Persian carpet, from design and wool preparation to dyeing and weaving, and to learn more about the skill, tradition, and imagination carried in each work. The program features a short educational talk alongside screenings of two animated films by acclaimed Iranian artist and animator Noureddin Zarrinkelk, The Little Prince and the Magic Carpet and Amir Hamzeh. | 4:40 PM | San Diego Arab Film Festival The San Diego Arab Film Festival is back for 2026 with live, in-person presentations of feature length and short films at the Museum of Photographic Arts. The festival will open on Friday, March 27, and present 8 screenings, each showcasing one feature film and one short film (except for one that has 2 shorts and one in which the feature is long so it doesn’t have an accompanying short), from across the Arab World. All films are presented at the John and Irwin Jacobs Theater in the Museum of Photographic Arts. Each evening, the festival will also offer cafeteria-style Arabic dinner.
This year we have all three films from and about Palestine that were shortlisted for the Best International feature award. Six of our films were the official submission by their respective countries for Best International Feature (Palestine 36, Palestine, The Voice of Hind Rajab, Tunisia, All that’s Left of You, Jordan, A Sad and Beautiful World, Lebanon, The President’s Cake, Iraq,, and Calle Malaga, Morocco. Our short films include two films about Palestine from Iranian filmmakers, who are struggling to find international audiences because of US sanctions, as well as films from Palestine, Jordan, Egypt and Yemen and the US.
We are excited to bring these films to the San Diego community!

San Diego’s original fine art festival, Mission Fed ArtWalk, will fill the streets of San Diego’s Little Italy district with more than 250 fine artists, four music stages, interactive art for families, food and fun, Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26, 2026. This year, the 42nd annual event will bring a weekend-long celebration of arts and culture to San Diego’s Little Italy.
Mission Fed ArtWalk attracts 100,000 art collectors and visitors from all over the country to purchase art from established and emerging artists during the two-day festival. The event features artists from every medium of art, including painting, sculpture, glass work, photography, fine jewelry and more. After browsing and purchasing one-of-a-kind works of art, directly from the artists, attendees can enjoy four stages of live music, interactive art experiences, street food, family-friendly art projects at KidsWalk and more.

| Dance: The Firebird This world premiere by resident choreographer Elizabeth Wistrich is an original ballet retelling of the story of The Firebird, a frequent feature of Russian fairy tales. Danced to Igor Stravinsky’s famous and beloved score, the story begins at a large party where a beautiful young girl, who possesses special mystical powers she doesn’t yet understand, is struggling to please her overbearing father. She begins to imagine a new and different life where she can be free to explore her dreams and find love. As her thoughts become stronger, she finds herself magically transitioning into a powerful creature and she can enter a whole new realm of existence where she can be wherever she desires to pursue her future and find the love of her life. Her journey is not an easy one. Finding peace, love, and harmony is more challenging than she ever imagined with powers that threaten to overwhelm her.

| 5:00 PM | San Diego French Film Festival Opening Ceremony Join us for the 6th edition of the San Diego French Film Festival, taking place May 3–7, 2026 at The LOT La Jolla and at the Carlsbad City Library, with a special focus on women’s voices and stories in francophone cinema. Discover inspiring francophone films (with English subtitles) that highlight women’s perspectives and creative talents from across the French-speaking world. The festival kicks off on Sunday, May 3, with a red-carpet Opening Gala, featuring the a feature film and a short film. Guests will enjoy an elegant soirée with gourmet hors d'oeuvres, desserts, champagne, and live entertainment, including a DJ-curated dance party.
Note, except for opening night, all films will be screened at both the Lot and at the Carlsbad Library.

| 8:00 PM | Music: Mariachi El Bronx Born out of a collective love for Mexican folk music over a decade ago, the members of the acclaimed LA punk band The Bronx were tasked with creating an acoustic set for a tv show they were asked to perform on. From there, this exciting new, and creatively fulfilling, endeavor began to take shape, which led to the release of the band’s eponymous debut album, Mariachi El Bronx (I), in September of 2009. The album would lead to praise by both critics and fans alike due to the band’s precise attention to detail and musically authentic take on the form.
