Many people say it is hard to learn Chinese characters, but perhaps they haven?t tried to learn through the etymologic perspective. Etymology (Yuyuan Xue 語源學) is the study of the original writing, meaning, and pronunciation of characters. Each character is shown in different calligraphy styles such as, seal script, clerical script, regular script, and cursive script over time. The form of the characters will usually reflect their meanings. Therefore, applying Etymology in language learning would help us, not only truly understand why and how the characters were formed, but also appreciate Chinese history and culture through these characters. In this way, remembering characters is simple and meaningful.
