Innovative and eclectic chamber group, Besos de Coco, is stirring up a great deal of excitement with their groundwork performances in Southern California. Tap-dancer Claudia Gomez Vorce, double-bassist Evona Wascinski, and classical guitarist/vocalist Lorraine Castellanos formed the trio in August 2011 when the musically magnetic connection was soon recognized. Individually, each of the three women are compelling and masterful artists in their particular musical disciplines. Collectively, Besos de Coco presents stunning musical performances destined for the world to experience.
Coming from a lineage of professional dancers, beginning with Mexican ballet folkloriko, Claudia Gomez Vorce also embraced other disciplines including Tap, Ballet, Jazz, Modern, and Hip-Hop. Claudia furthered her studies and was inspired by tap dance legends such as Bunny Briggs.
Originating from Eastern Europe, bassist Evona Wascinski has had the honor of studying with world-renowned double bassists, composers and professors Bertram Turetzky and Mark Dresser. Evona earned a B.A. in Music from the University of California, San Diego, specializing in Classical and Jazz Performance.
Filipina-American Lorraine Castellanos derives pure pleasure when interpreting the works of great Latin American and Western European composers on the classical guitar. While inspired by the likes of Andres Segovia, Castellanos finds vocal encouragement inidols such as Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington. She is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Classical Guitar Performance under the tutelage of Fred Benedetti.

| 8:00 PM | Music: Mariachi El Bronx Born out of a collective love for Mexican folk music over a decade ago, the members of the acclaimed LA punk band The Bronx were tasked with creating an acoustic set for a tv show they were asked to perform on. From there, this exciting new, and creatively fulfilling, endeavor began to take shape, which led to the release of the band’s eponymous debut album, Mariachi El Bronx (I), in September of 2009. The album would lead to praise by both critics and fans alike due to the band’s precise attention to detail and musically authentic take on the form.

Born in New York City on August 2, 1924, this year marks the centennial of the eminent writer, a momentous occasion that is celebrated by the release of one of Meshell Ndegeocello’s most intrepid efforts to date: No More Water: The Gospel Of James Baldwin. With No More Water, Ndegeocello embarks on a prophetic musical odyssey that transcends boundaries and genres, delving headfirst into race, sexuality, religion, and other recurring themes explored in the celebrated writer’s canon. In the attic of her Southern California home, she came across a little suitcase containing the journal of her great-grandfather Prosper Lévy-Neymarck documenting daily life in Occupied France. A recipe book written by her grandmother, Blanche, accompanied the journal. Tragically, Prosper and Blanche would fall victim to the Nazi genocide, but their writings survived and have now found a broader audience through the labors of their great-granddaughter. Both an invaluable primary source and a heartfelt homage to daily life in dark times, “Bitter Sweet: A Wartime Journal and Heirloom Recipes from Occupied France” (2023) reclaims their experiences and culinary acumen for posterity.

In this special presentation, celebrated shadow puppet master (dhalang) Woro Mustiko Siwi—one of the few women in Indonesia to achieve national and international acclaim in this traditionally male-dominated art form—will lead a condensed one-hour performance, thoughtfully adapted from the full six- to eight-hour format. | 3:00 PM | Opera: Zarzuela at the Villa Zarzuela comes to San Diego! A passionate beauty sways the hearts and political leanings of two men as Spain is torn between monarchy and revolution in Federico Moreno Torroba’s “Luisa Fernanda.” This fiery yet romantic drama is a great example of Zarzuela, a unique Spanish art form incorporating classical singing as well as spoken words to tell stories of the people. “Luisa Fernanda” was written in 1932, and it has been one of the most beloved Zarzuelas ever since. Cinballera Entertainment is honoring San Diego’s rich Hispanic history by performing this Zarzuela in concert at the beautiful Villa Montezuma. The production will be performed in costume and with as much staging as possible in the intimate setting of the Villa. Cinballera’s Season 3 finale also honors its founders’ operatic history.
