Chronos Theatre Group presents Johnny Tenorio by Carlos Morton, directed by Goyo Flores. The play, a colorful New World version of the traditional Spanish legend of Don Juan in English, Spanish, and Spanglish. Each performance will be followed by a fiesta in the Forum with live music and a cantina with beer, wine, and tequila, as well as free pan de muertos and chips and salsa. In the spirit of the holiday, traditional altars by set designer Jose Iturriega will explore the history of the holiday from ancient to modern times as a way to commemorate those who have passed on.
Johnny Tenorio was inspired by Spanish playwrights Tirso de Molina and Jose Zorrilla, whose versions of the legend of the repentant rake Don Juan have become traditions in Spain and Latin America during the Days of the Dead on November 1st and 2nd. The play is an amalgam of Spanish, Aztec, Mexican and U.S. pop cultures -- or, as Luis Valdez put it when asked to define Chicano theatre, it?s a ?mixture of Brecht and Cantinflas.? In that tradition, we offer this play as a lively evening of entertainment for our audiences...as well as food for thought.
