Led by professor John Blanco of UCSD, Las Filipinas in the World Discussion Book Series begins with a discussion of the influence of Filipino national hero Rizal?s books and their central role in the Filipino literary tradition. Come hear why "Noli Me Tangere" is required reading for high school students in the Philippines. More than a century after its publication, it remains the most succinct symbolic drama of the Philippines at a crossroads between a decaying Spanish empire and the rise of U.S. imperialism in Southeast Asia.
