Taiwan Cinema Spotlight

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
The first annual Taiwan Cinema Spotlight, a partnership between the Taiwan Academy, Pacific Arts Movement and the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA), opens this year on June 5th. The program will be an annual event at MOPA and will focus on a different aspect of Taiwanese cinema each year.

This year's spotlight is "King Hu in Taiwan." Hu is revered as a wildly creative and impeccable craftsman of the wuxia genre. While other directors experimented across genres and unleashed countless films per year, Hu was the perfectionist with a razor-sharp vision of Chinese aesthetics and philosophy, and how those principles could translate into bravura action editing, elaborate staging, and cutting-edge special effects. The director made his greatest films in the exploding Taiwanese film industry of the 1960s and early 70s. With two newly-restored prints, "King Hu in Taiwan" explores the filmmaker at his prime, and is the first spotlight on Hu ever in San Diego.
