His Excellency Ramon Gil-Casares was appointed Ambassador of Spain to the United States of America on April 13, 2012. Prior to that, he was appointed Ambassador of Spain to Sudan from May 2011 to April 2012 and Ambassador to South Africa from September 2005 until October 2008. Ambassador Gil-Casares' career in the Spanish Diplomatic service also included postings as Ambassador at Large for Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Madrid. His Excellency worked at the German Marshall Fund in Washington DC from September 2004 through March 2005. Following Jos? Mar?a Aznar's election ?in May 1996? he was appointed Director of the Department for International Affairs and Defense of the President's Office, where he served until July 2002, when he became the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs until 2004. Ambassador Gil-Casares gained his experience in the Spanish administration between the years of 1982?when he joined the Foreign Service? and 1996 by working in several embassies and agencies, such as the Spanish Embassies of Equatorial Guinea and Uruguay, the Spanish Consulates in Manila and New York, as well as the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation in Madrid. He was born in Madrid on October 26th, 1953. He majored in Philosophy and in Law and also obtained a Diploma in International Studies from the Diplomatic School of Madrid. He is a Second Lieutenant of the Infantry.
