Celebrate Jamaican Emancipation Day at the WorldBeat Center and enjoy the Morgan Heritage concert.
The Emancipation was declared on July 31, 1838. At Midnight many slaves went to the hilltops to greet the sun on August 1, 1838 because it symbolized a new beginning in their lives. Emancipation meant that the 300,000+ slaves that lived in Jamaica were now free to choose what they wanted to do with their lives. Some remained on sugar estates and worked for wages while others headed for the hillsides eventually forming free villages. The slaves were now free to express their feelings and emotions and enjoy a liberated life.
